Practically anything could be locked with a padlock: doors, gates, chests and boxes.
But dating the locks can be a problem. Sometimes two or more generations of smiths could continue making locks with the same shape without changing the mechanism. In the Parviz Tanavoli collection of padlocks, many of which are listed in the catalogue, most of the locks are dated to the 18th–20th centuries.
