Money chests

Introduction

In my web book, under the headings Locks for chests and boxes and Safes and vaults, I explain that the oldest money chests in Sweden were used in churches. In this chapter I would mainly like to provide the background to the unique iron cash boxes that became so common here in Sweden during the nineteenth century and explore their locking devices and origin.

Special chests for valuable items have been used for a very long time. As is so often the case in our technological history, the Romans were first. At the time of Christ’s birth they developed the special wooden chests that were protected with closely spaced iron rivets and fitted with locks.
